To show our appreciation and community awareness for the South Texas region, Reliant Energy partners with the Laredo Bucks professional ice hockey team.
We’re currently in our third year of the Reliant Energy Power Players Program, which supports after-school flag football and homework programs for the Greater Houston–area Boys and Girls Clubs.
For the second year, eight Houston-area high school student athletes will receive $1,000 scholarships as part of the Reliant EnergyScholarship for Champions—Powering Strong Minds and Bodies program. The winners were selected by Reliant Energy and the Houston Texans based on both academic and athletic performance as well as strong leadership and commitment to ethics.
Through our partnership with Rebuilding Together Houston, Reliant brought Texans players and our employee volunteers together to rebuild low-income households in inner-city Houston.
Here are just a few of the ways we helped make the 2008 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ the most memorable yet.
Plugged-In Concert Series Promoting Energy Efficiency
In the spirit of energy efficiency, we treated our fellow Texans to a free country concert series featuring some of our state's brightest music stars. Every weeknight during the Rodeo, we presented the Plugged-In Concert Series, a chance for rodeo-goers to enjoy great music and get tips on making their homes more energy-efficient.
"Teach Me Energy" in AGVENTURE
Kids visiting our booth in AGVENTURE had the chance to see a demonstration of our fun, interactive Teach Me Energy website. Catch the Moment was also on hand to snap family photos in a variety of colorful rodeo settings.
Power of Art Program
Each year we support Houston’s budding artists by giving them a chance to shine in our Power of Art contest. We posted artwork from 25 elementary school students on the PowerZone website, where visitors could vote for their favorite pieces. The three students with the most votes will receive free art supplies for their schools and districts as well as a Rodeo gift package.
Reliant Energy Scholarship
Reliant is also the Rodeo’s largest supporter of youth and education, helping to provide educational opportunities that make a difference in the lives of Texas youth. Each year, we give a deserving Texas high school senior the chance to go to college through the Rodeo’s scholarship program.
Thanks to everyone who participated in our 2008 Rodeo events. We’re already looking forward to next year!
This partnership gives us the chance to participate in community activities such as Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas (RTGD). Reliant has helped build houses for families in North Texas and donated free electricity for a year to each family.
We also work with the Rangers and RTGD to educate customers on energy efficiency, which helps them save on their electricity bills. Reliant has teamed up with RTGD to install energy-efficient air conditioning units in 10 to 15 homes each year. And through the Home Runs for Homes program, for every home run the team hits at Rangers Ballpark, Reliant donates $100 to benefit home improvement projects designed to improve energy efficiency.
Over the past three years, the School’s Out Celebration has rewarded over 13,000 young students for their hard work and dedication in reaching their academic goals and finishing the school year. The program donates free tickets to local CCISD schools and treats 5,500 area fifth- and sixth-grade students to a day at the ballpark.
Continuing with our support of Habitat for Humanity, Reliant Energy sponsored the building of three homes in the Corpus Christi area and donated $1,500 dollars worth of free electricity to each family.
The Stars’ 50 wins and 107 points in their 2006-2007 season made them the 5th best team in the National Hockey League (NHL). In the past decade, only one other NHL team has posted more than 100 point seasons. Reliant Energy is excited to have partnered with such a respected team in the NHL.
Through the Power Blast Program, for every home run hit by an Astros player at Minute Maid Park during the 2008 season, Reliant will donate $250 to the Houston-area Boys and Girls Club. In 2007, we donated $17,500 for 70 home runs, plus $2,750 from the Home Run Derby for a total of $20,250. Since the inception of the Power Blast Program in 2005, Reliant has donated over $71,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston.
Reliant Energy is in the second year of our partnership with Baseball USA, which offers playing fields and facilities to over 500,000 young athletes. Reliant is a strong believer in community outreach through athletics and civic involvement, and this core value aligns with Baseball USA’s mission to have a lifelong positive impact on our community’s youth.
Each year, Reliant Energy hosts 10 outstanding Laredo ISD students and their parents, as well as donating 50 tickets to the Boys and Girls Club of Laredo for their Reliant Energy Night. The Bucks are one of three teams representing Texas in the Central Hockey League.
Reliant invites customers, employees and military personnel out to enjoy a Colts game every year. We value our community involvement in San Angelo, home of a Reliant Energy Call Center.
As part of our commitment to the communities in which we live and work, Reliant Energy teamed up with the Brahmas. Our sponsorship of the community teams and leagues, in addition to the Blacktop Brahmas tour is something that we are excited about. The tour, is aimed at teaching youth of North Texas the fundamentals and safety of in-line and street hockey.
Reliant Park has quickly become a landmark here in Houston, hosting more than 200 events each year. In addition to providing Houston with a community attraction, Reliant has embarked upon an initiative that will help make the Park more energy efficient, lowering the county’s electric bill. The Greening of Reliant Park campaign is part of a much larger cause to help the city of Houston become more energy efficient, save resources and save money all at the same time.
This year, Reliant Energy and the Park’s building management company, SMG, partnered together to help plant a community garden at a local Boys and Girls Club. The garden will consist of various vegetables that will be available to those in the surrounding neighborhood. After the vegetables have matured, the Boys and Girls Club and Reliant Energy will open the garden, and members of the community may come and pick the vegetables to take home to their families.
Reliant Energy is proud to be a part of the ACU Athletic Facility and the baseball, softball, soccer and track programs. The school’s athletic facility not only gives students a platform on which to excel and showcase their talents, but also promotes the importance of education and the student part of student-athlete.
